Outdoor Dance Shoot The Beach
Beach shoots are great! Fortunately, I live very close to three very pretty and quiet beaches, which dancers can travel to, or I can come to you.
The beach offers lots of options for images that you wouldn’t get in a studio. Such as being able to choose if you want the sand or the sea as the backdrop. The sand can vary in texture and colour dependent on where you stand. It can also be rippled; which gives an interesting effect. Or there can be areas of still water, which are good for images with reflections or splashes.
The Seascape often changes while the shoot is taking place, how far in or out the tide is, the way the sun is reflecting on the water or how much movement there is in the waves on the shoreline. On one of our local beaches, we have the option of an offshore wind farm as a back drop.
These images were all taken on the same day. We chose not to have a seascape in this shoot because we were saving that for another costume
Silecroft Beach
Image 1 of the splash was taken in a very small rocky area, where the water was quite shallow. The rocks either side were handy for somewhere to place the lights, and the ones under the water weren’t too slippery. We positioned ourselves so Jess had the sun behind her.
The next two images were taken very close to the small rock pool, we pretty much just turned around, Jess had a costume and hair change and the lights were repositioned so that she had the sun in front of her. The rippled sand made for an interesting floor and it looks like it could be in two entirely different locations.
The next images are from a splash shoot. We went with the intention of only using the sea scape. This corner of the beach is a favourite of mine, when the tide is in, it’s only a five-minute walk from the car with the kit, which is always a bonus!
Haverigg Beach
The sun was behind my dancer and the sea was calm. It is quite difficult for a dancer to jump out of the water like that so it took a couple of practice runs for Angel to judge how much strength was needed. I bought a clear umbrella for this shoot because we were after the extra splash, without her being completely soaked and even in summer, the water was quite cold. We ended up roping in Angel’s boyfriend who had the task of throwing the water at the umbrella at exactly the right time.
As I mentioned earlier, in Jessica’s first shoot we avoided the seascape because we had something else in mind and a new costume was needed. We wanted to try a shoot with Jess wearing a chiffon dress. These images had a completely different ‘feel’ to the first shoot.
The colour of the dress really stood out against the beach backdrop, which was our aim and at that point there was only a slight wind which helped with the movement of the chiffon. Later, we tried some more images in a different location but the wind had increased and it made managing the dress quite difficult. Before the shoot Jess had practiced with the costume, learning how it moved and how to manage it. There were a couple of small alterations made to make it easier for her to dance in.
